Women & Theatre celebrate their 40th anniversary with a season of work including a new commission Not the Last a play about Louisa Ryland who donated the land which would become Cannon Hill Park.

Janice Connolly and Jess Pearson step down from leading the company after 40 and 20 years respectfully.

W&T celebrated its 30th anniversary with a new production at The REP called For the Past 30 Years.

Awarded funds from ACE’s Catalyst programme as part of a consortium with other theatre companies.

W&T’s produced The Palace of Wasted Dreams, in association with mac, paving the way for other shows where participants took active roles in the creation of new theatre.

W&T moved premises to The Old Lodge at the Uffculme Centre, a site owned by Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust.

Overall winners of GlaxoSmithKline’s Impact Awards for excellence in community health, receiving a prize of £30,000.

W&T became a Creative Partnerships partner to a cluster of 5 schools.

W&T celebrated the millennium with a national tour of new musical, Tribe of Beorma. Further small-scale theatre tours included Fag Hag (2002) & The Bad One (2004 & 2008).

Victoria Firth was appointed as the first General Manager, to co-run the Company with Janice.

W&T received a National Lottery grant for 2 Mercedes vans.

Over time the member’s interests diversified and one by one 3 of the 4 co-founders left to pursue different interests. Janice Connolly remained committed to the Company & in 1995 became Artistic Director.

W&T developed the first of many bi-lingual productions – Chori Chori (English/ Punjabi) which engaged young people on subjects of healthy relationships, sexual health & HIV.

In response to the need for public education around HIV, W&T began to focus its work on health and social care issues developing a national reputation for excellence in the field of Theatre in Health Education. W&T secured office space at The Friends Institute – which became W&T’s home for over 25 years.

Janice Connolly, Polly Wright, Jo Broadwood & Sue Learwood, decided to continue the work on a full time basis, collaboratively devising new theatre relevant to the experiences of women.

Nine women took part in a course of drama workshops funded by the Workers Educational Association entitled Women & Theatre, which led to a devised piece called Choices.
