Statement on Birmingham City Council cuts to Arts & Culture

Posted on Feb 27, 2024

Women & Theatre are devastated about the proposed Birmingham City Council cuts to Arts and Culture. We believe that art and culture play a vital role in Birmingham’s civic life. These cuts will have a significant impact on local people’s chances and wellbeing.

Due to the holistic style of the way we work we’ve collaborated with many council services and we are therefore fearful of the impact this will have on areas such as family support, youth services and care for the elderly and disabled communities. The communities we work with, and value as artists in their own right, will be deeply affected by these cuts. We also note that this comes after many years of underinvestment.

As a company we will continue to work with our communities, third sector partners and arts organisations to find ways to keep access to the arts open during this challenging time.

Whilst on this occasion Women & Theatre are not directly affected by these cuts, we stand in solidarity with the organisations affected. As members of Culture Central we are sharing their collective response to this news here.
